The Truth About Minerals in Water

“Doesn’t reverse osmosis filter out minerals your body needs?”

It is a fair question. Calcium and magnesium are essential nutrients, and reverse osmosis can reduce both in drinking water. But that fact alone does not tell the whole nutritional story.

The more useful questions are how much your water contributes toward your daily mineral needs and what your filtration system reduces along with those minerals.

Food generally supplies most of our calcium and magnesium. Water can contribute, but that contribution varies by source. Understanding the difference can help you choose a water purifier without confusing mineral content with overall water quality.

Absorption Is Not the Same as Daily Intake

Your body can absorb minerals from drinking water. The misconception is not that these minerals are unusable, but that their presence necessarily makes water a major source of daily nutrition.

A small study comparing equal calcium doses from mineral water, milk, and a supplement found no significant differences in the measured indicators of calcium bioavailability. Think of it this way: how well your body uses a nutrient and how much you consume are two different questions.

The World Health Organization identifies food as the principal source of calcium and magnesium. Its background review on water hardness cites a typical drinking-water contribution of approximately 5–20% for these minerals. This is a broad estimate, not a fixed percentage for every household. Put the Mineral Contribution in Perspective

Consider water containing 40 milligrams of calcium per liter. Drinking two liters would provide 80 milligrams of calcium, or 8% of the 1,000-milligram daily recommendation for adults ages 19–50. NIH calcium guidance

That is a contribution, but it leaves most of the daily requirement to other sources.

This example uses an illustrative mineral concentration, not a measurement of Texas tap water or NECOA’s output. Mineral-rich water can provide considerably more, while low-mineral water provides less. Two liters is used for the calculation, not as a personalized drinking recommendation.

The practical takeaway is simple: your water’s mineral content should be considered as part of your diet, not treated as a complete nutrition plan.

Food Comes First

Everyday foods offer many ways to meet mineral needs.

Milk, yogurt, cheese, calcium-fortified foods and beverages, and certain vegetables provide calcium. Nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, and leafy greens provide magnesium.

Building meals around nutrient-rich foods gives you a more deliberate approach to mineral intake than relying on an unknown amount in your water.

When diet does not meet your needs, appropriate supplementation may help close a gap. A healthcare professional or registered dietitian can help determine whether it is needed and in what amount. Supplements are not automatically necessary simply because you drink RO-filtered water.

How Is RO Different From Your Refrigerator Filter?

Most refrigerator filters use activated carbon to reduce chlorine taste and odor. Depending on the cartridge, they may also reduce lead and other contaminants covered by their specific certifications.

However, standard activated carbon filtration generally does not significantly reduce dissolved calcium and magnesium. Those minerals usually remain in the water. Purdue Extension

Reverse osmosis adds a membrane-based treatment stage that can reduce dissolved minerals and certain contaminants that ordinary carbon filtration does not effectively address.

Neither “carbon” nor “RO” tells you everything about a product’s performance. The specific system, its tested reduction claims, and proper maintenance matter. Look at What the Complete System Reduces

Mineral reduction is only one side of the filtration discussion. The other is what unwanted substances the system is designed to address.

Different stages perform different jobs. Carbon filtration is important for reducing many volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, that an RO membrane alone may not reliably remove. For someone whose diet already meets their mineral needs, reducing a modest mineral contribution from water may be an acceptable tradeoff for reducing specific unwanted contaminants.

What NECOA’s Low TDS Readings Mean

NECOA reports that its models routinely achieve treated-water TDS readings below 10 ppm in field measurements across Texas locations.

TDS stands for total dissolved solids. These readings indicate very low dissolved-solids content, consistent with the system’s reduction of dissolved minerals. Field observations are not a guarantee that every installation will produce the same reading.

Importantly, TDS is not a complete water-safety test.

A low reading does not independently establish how much PFAS, VOCs, or microplastics a system removes. Those claims require contaminant-specific testing. Likewise, a higher TDS reading can reflect calcium and magnesium rather than harmful contamination. NSF guidance

The two forms of information serve different purposes: TDS helps describe dissolved-solids content, while performance testing identifies specific contaminant reductions.

A Balanced Approach to Better Water

Choosing a purifier does not require pretending that minerals are unimportant. It requires putting their contribution in context.

Food generally supplies most dietary calcium and magnesium. Water may add a smaller or, in some cases, meaningful amount. If you switch from mineral-rich water to low-mineral water, account for that change in your overall intake.

At the same time, evaluate what your purifier is designed to reduce, how it is maintained, and how conveniently it fits your daily routine.
